From the 18 December 2023 the Consulate of Italy in Adelaide will activate the service for issuing Electronic Identity Cards – CIE, for Italian citizens resident in South Australia and duly registered in the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (AIRE).

The new Electronic Identity Card is a multifunctional document: it certifies the citizen’s identity, contains the tax code and can be used to request an identity on the SPID system (Public Digital Identity System) with which to access the services provided by the Italian Public Administration.

Unlike what happens with the issuing of a passport, the CIE is not issued on sight by the Consulate but is produced by the Polygraphic and Mint Institute of State in Rome and subsequently sent from Italy, by post, to the address of residence (or address) declared by the applicant.

For more information on the service, visit the following page Electronic Identity Card – CIE on the Italian Consulate’s website.
