The XXIV Week of the Italian Language in the World was held with great success from October 14 to 21. This annual initiative, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, aims to promote the Italian language and culture on a global scale. This year’s theme, “The Italian Language and the Book,” offered a unique opportunity to reflect on the significance of literature and the promotion of our language.

The closing event, organized by the Italian Consulate, took place in the historic Mortlock Chamber of the State Library—an emblematic venue that provided an ideal backdrop for the celebrations. During the evening, Consul Ernesto Pianelli expressed heartfelt gratitude to the State Library and its staff, particularly acknowledging the outgoing Director, Geoff Strempel, for their warm welcome and support. Special recognition was also given to the Exhibitions and Conservation team for showcasing valuable fragments of a medieval manuscript in Italian.

The event featured distinguished speakers and guests, including Mark Gilbert, the Exhibitions, Media and Marketing Librarian; Hon. John Gardner MP, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Education; Dr. Dale Atkinson, Director of External Relations at the Department for Education; and Cav. Phillip Donato, President of the Italian Association of South Australia. This gathering served as a significant occasion to discuss the importance of teaching the Italian language in South Australian schools, a matter of great interest to the Italian community.

During the event, the Consul of Italy awarded the Consul’s Book Award to Samoda Silva, an Italian student at Flinders University. The official proceedings began and concluded with a performance by emerging artists from State Opera South Australia, who had taken Italian lessons to enhance their pronunciation, supported by the Consulate. Laura Danesin, Marketing Director of State Opera South Australia, presented the Italian language coaching program, highlighting the fruitful collaboration between the State Opera and the Italian Consulate, which underscores the valuable synergies between art and culture.

The Italian Consulate extends its gratitude to the Italian government and all involved institutions for their continued support of programs and initiatives vital to our community. The XXIV Week of the Italian Language in the World not only celebrated our language but also reinforced the connections between the Italian community and local institutions. We remain committed to promoting Italian language and culture in South Australia.
