Do I need to register my marriage?
The registration of the act of marriage is mandatory and must be registered in Italy.
How much does it cost?
The registration of a marriage in the Council’s records is completely free if done through the Consulate.
What documents should I submit?
• The registration request form filled in and signed by the applicant (available in the ‘Forms’ section or click here);
• An original copy of the marriage certificate issued by the ”Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages” with apostille from the “Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade“;
• A photocopy of the marriage certificate and apostille;
• A translation into Italian (not necessarily done by an official translator);
• A photocopy of the translation;
• Photocopies of the passports of both spouses;
• A photocopy of the birth certificate of the foreign spouse (personal details registered on the birth certificate must coincide with the details recorded on the marriage certificate).
Do I need to make an appointment?
No need to book an appointment.
The transcription of the marriage certificate can be made without an appointment by submitting the required documentation in person at the Consulate during the public opening hours.

How soon can my wife/husband apply for Italian citizenship?
After three years of marriage it is possible to apply for the Italian citizenship (timing will be halved if minor children are born from the marriage).
After obtaining citizenship, he/she can also request an Italian passport.
