Certificate of “Non-Renunciation”

If the applicant has decided to establish their residence in Italy, the authorities of the Italian municipality are responsible for recognizing Italian citizenship. Once registered in the resident population registry, the foreign citizen may begin the process for the recognition of citizenship jure sanguinis, by submitting the documentation outlined in Circular K.28.1/1991. It is not possible for the applicant to be represented by a legal proxy or by someone else; the applicant must be physically present in the country.

The request for the issuance of the “Non-Renunciation” Certificate is made directly by the Italian municipality to the Consulate, exclusively via PEC (certified email). The Consulate’s response to the municipality (not to the applicant) is also always and only sent via PEC, provided that the request was submitted correctly.

Applicants may not contact the Consular Office directly regarding applications handled by municipalities or other Consular Offices, as the progress of such applications beyond one’s own responsibility is not known.
