Thanks to its highly advanced security and anti-counterfeiting features, it grants the holder\u2019s identity verification and the access to online services of Public Administrations. Besides establishing the holder\u2019s identity, the CIE is also equipped with an electronic component which adopts the most advanced technologies available and thus represents the digital identity of citizens. For more detailed information please read here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartaidentita.interno.gov.it\/en\/home\/\">The Electronic Identity Card (CIE) &#8211; Funziona, semplicemente (interno.gov.it)<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Within the borders of Schengen States (EU + Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein) and other States with which bilateral agreements have been reached, CIE equates to a passport.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Starting from June 1, 2026<\/strong>, citizens <strong>registered with the AIRE <\/strong>may submit an application for the <strong>issuance of the Electronic Identity Card<\/strong> (CIE) <strong>at any Italian municipality<\/strong>. The identity card will be delivered according to the same procedures provided for applications submitted through the Consular Office.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In order to successfully apply for the CIE, an applicant must:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Be an Italian citizen<\/li>\n<li>Be legally resident in <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SOUTH AUSTRALIA<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Be registered in AIRE (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all\u2019Estero). In case the information isn\u2019t up-to-date, before requesting an appointment for the identity card, it will be necessary to update all records as per the instructions provided in our website (link to the page servizi Consolari e visti in English of our website)\u00a0<strong>APPLICATION PROCEDURE<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The application for an electronic ID card\u00a0must be\u00a0submitted through the\u00a0online platform <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/prenotami.esteri.it\/\"><strong>Prenot@mi<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Prenot@mi it will be possible to book a single or a multiple appointment (max for two). If a parent wishes to book an appointment for a minor child, a form must be files with the child\u2019s details.<strong> Married women<\/strong> must indicate their maiden surname in the application. Italian law does not allow women to take the married surname.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You should allow 15 days between the booking and the appointment, in order to allow the personnel to make all the necessary checks and verify there are no impediments. The Consulate will inform the applicant of any impediments before the appointment. It is mandatory to be present at the Consulate the day of the appointment as fingerprints will be taken.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 \u00a02.\u00a0 DOCUMENTS REQUESTED<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>One passport-size photo<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Previous Identity Card or other Identification document (even if expired) or two witnesses\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Consent of both parents for applicant under 18<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Proof of residency in South Australia<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Debit card for payments (no contactless)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a03.\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>VALIDITY OF CIE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The validity of the ID card changes according to the age of the holder, more specifically:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>3 years for minors aged 0 to 2 years;<\/li>\n<li>5 years for minors aged 3 to 17 years;<\/li>\n<li>10 years for adults (aged 18 and above).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. DELIVERY OF THE CIE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>CIE will NOT be emitted on the day of the appointment<\/strong>: it will be mailed with registered letter from Italy to the applicant\u2019s residential address. The applicant will be able to track the delivery online through the tracking code provided (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poste.it\/prodotti\/raccomandata.html\">https:\/\/www.poste.it\/prodotti\/raccomandata.html<\/a>). In case the applicant\u2019s address is not correct, after 30 days the CIE will be forwarded to the Consulate of Italy in Adelaide which will try to contact the applicant for collection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.
