{"id":238,"date":"2023-01-03T18:09:03","date_gmt":"2023-01-03T07:39:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consadelaide.esteri.it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T10:31:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T00:01:08","slug":"cittadinanza","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/consadelaide.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/","title":{"rendered":"Citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"56\" data-end=\"226\">Article 1 of Law No. 91\/92, which can be consulted at the following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.normattiva.it\/uri-res\/N2Ls?urn:nir:stato:legge:1992-02-05;91!vig=\">link<\/a>, establishes that <strong><em>a child born to an Italian father or mother is an Italian citizen by birth<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"228\" data-end=\"427\">Italian citizenship is transmitted from parent to child, <strong>with the condition that the Italian parent has never renounced their citizenship or acquired another nationality during the minor\u2019s childhood.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"429\" data-end=\"510\">To recognize Italian citizenship by descent, the following points must be proven:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li data-start=\"514\" data-end=\"586\">The ancestry must trace back to <strong>an ancestor born in Italy<\/strong> (dante causa).<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"589\" data-end=\"690\">The dante causa must have <strong>maintained their citizenship until the direct descendant reached adulthood<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"693\" data-end=\"992\">The <strong>descent from the dante causa must be proven<\/strong> through civil status records (birth, marriage, divorce, death). These records must be accompanied by legalization, if required, and an official translation. It should be noted that documents issued in Australia must be authenticated with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfat.gov.au\/about-us\/our-services\/apostilles-authentications-certificates-of-no-impediment-to-marriage\/Pages\/apostilles-authentications-and-certificates-of-no-impediment-to-marriage\">Apostille<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"994\" data-end=\"1127\">Applicants born abroad and holding another nationality <strong>are not considered to have automatically acquired Italian citizenship<\/strong>, unless:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1250\">A direct ancestor (either parent or grandparent) held \u2013 or held at the time of death \u2013 <strong>exclusively<\/strong> Italian citizenship.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1253\" data-end=\"1422\">A parent or adoptive parent was <strong>resident in Italy for at least two consecutive years<\/strong> after acquiring Italian citizenship and <strong>before<\/strong> the birth (or adoption) of the child.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1424\" data-end=\"1478\"><strong>For general inquiries about procedures or documentation, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NO<\/span> responses will be provided via email or phone. The Consulate is NOT able to book appointments for users. Please refer to the relevant website pages.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1424\" data-end=\"1478\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong data-start=\"1424\" data-end=\"1478\">DOCUMENTS TO PRESENT ON THE DAY OF THE APPOINTMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1480\" data-end=\"1504\">For the adult applicant:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1508\" data-end=\"1591\">Identity document and proof of residence (passport, driver\u2019s license, utility bill)<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1594\" data-end=\"1642\">Birth certificate with Apostille and translation<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1645\" data-end=\"1712\">(If applicable) Marriage certificate with Apostille and translation<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1715\" data-end=\"1776\">(If applicable) Divorce decree with Apostille and translation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1778\" data-end=\"1793\">For the parent:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1797\" data-end=\"1877\">Extract of the birth certificate (to be requested from the Italian municipality)<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1880\" data-end=\"1967\">(If applicable) Marriage certificate (with Apostille and translation if married abroad)<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1970\" data-end=\"2050\">(If applicable) Divorce decree (with Apostille and translation if issued abroad)<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2053\" data-end=\"2163\">Historical residence certificate from Italy or certificate of non-Australian citizenship\/Vevo if born in Italy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2165\" data-end=\"2428\">If the applicant\u2019s parent holds another nationality and has not resided in Italy for two consecutive years, proof that at least one grandparent was or is<strong> exclusively<\/strong> an Italian citizen must be provided, along with a certificate of non-Australian citizenship\/Vevo.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2430\" data-end=\"2438\"><strong data-start=\"2430\" data-end=\"2438\">FEES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2440\" data-end=\"2782\">The processing of the citizenship application for an adult applicant involves a fee of 600 Euros, payable in local currency either in cash or by debit card. This is an obligatory contribution required by law for processing the application and does not guarantee a positive outcome. Therefore, it is <strong data-start=\"2739\" data-end=\"2757\">NOT REFUNDABLE<\/strong> under any circumstances.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"6286\" data-end=\"6305\"><strong data-start=\"6286\" data-end=\"6305\">IMPORTANT NOTES<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"6309\" data-end=\"6433\"><strong data-start=\"6309\" data-end=\"6324\">Only adults<\/strong> can apply for recognition of Italian citizenship by descent. <strong>For minors, please refer to the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/consadelaide.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/\">Civil Status link<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"6436\" data-end=\"6626\">Only <strong data-start=\"6441\" data-end=\"6464\">Australian citizens<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"6468\" data-end=\"6528\">holders of a permanent residence visa in South Australia<\/strong> may apply at this Consulate. Proof of SA residency is required when submitting the application.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"6629\" data-end=\"6738\">Applications must be submitted <strong data-start=\"6660\" data-end=\"6707\">individually, in person, and by <a href=\"https:\/\/consadelaide.esteri.it\/en\/chi-siamo\/contatti\/informazioni-utili\/book-your-appointment\/\">appointment<\/a><\/strong> with complete documentation. The Consulate<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> cannot<\/strong><\/span> book appointments for users.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"6741\" data-end=\"6993\">If multiple family members apply for recognition of citizenship from the same ancestor, either together or separately, <strong data-start=\"6860\" data-end=\"6889\">only one set of documents<\/strong> concerning the ancestor and shared descendants is needed, as long as <strong data-start=\"6959\" data-end=\"6990\">all applicants reside in SA<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"6996\" data-end=\"7164\">SA residents whose relatives were recognized as Italian citizens at another Consulate or in Italy must still <strong data-start=\"7105\" data-end=\"7138\">submit original documentation<\/strong> regarding the ancestor.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"7167\" data-end=\"7283\"><strong data-start=\"7167\" data-end=\"7212\">Translations or conformity certifications<\/strong> for transcription into Italian civil records are <strong data-start=\"7262\" data-end=\"7280\">free of charge<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"7286\" data-end=\"7378\">For where to obtain documents, certificates, and translations, refer to this <a href=\"https:\/\/consadelaide.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/0000_Vademecum-certificates.docx\">guide<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"7381\" data-end=\"7652\">For non-Australian documents, the applicant must check the <strong data-start=\"7440\" data-end=\"7475\">formal and substantive validity<\/strong> with the relevant Italian Consulate. In exceptional cases, this Consulate may certify the translation if the original is in English and issued by an English-speaking country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"7381\" data-end=\"7652\"><strong>All documents must be original and will not be returned.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"7724\" data-end=\"7814\">Documents already in the possession of this Consulate do <strong data-start=\"7781\" data-end=\"7811\">not need to be resubmitted<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"7817\" data-end=\"7918\">The Citizenship Office may request additional documents if those submitted are deemed insufficient.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"7921\" data-end=\"7981\"><strong data-start=\"7921\" data-end=\"7978\">Document collection is the applicant&#8217;s responsibility<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"7984\" data-end=\"8177\">The process of verifying Italian citizenship will be completed within <strong data-start=\"8054\" data-end=\"8066\">36 months<\/strong>, as established by Law 71\/2011 .<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"8180\" data-end=\"8372\">The Consulate will send an <strong data-start=\"8207\" data-end=\"8238\">official email notification<\/strong> of the result, and, in case of a positive outcome, will forward documentation to the relevant municipality in Italy for registration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"8540\" data-end=\"8656\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consadelaide.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Informativa_TDP_per_cittadinanza__all.2__Rev._feb._2023.1.docx\"><strong>Information on the processing of personal data for the purpose of recognizing Italian citizenship iure sanguinis or its acquisition by naturalization<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Article 1 of Law No. 91\/92, which can be consulted at the following link, establishes that a child born to an Italian father or mother is an Italian citizen by birth.
