REMEMBRANCE DAY 2010 – LET’S REMEMBER THE FOIBS AND THE ISTRIAN-DALMATIAN EXODUS
This year the “Giorno del Ricordo” was celebrated solemnly and in a very heartfelt atmosphere, with a mass at the Cathedral on 10 February, organized by the Committed for Remembrance Day. The mass was followed by a reception hosted by the Consul of Italy for South Australia, Tommaso Coniglio, that was attended by over a hundred people, including the Minister for Multicultural Affairs of SA, Hon. Michael Atkinson, David Ridgeway MLC, Carmel Zollo MLC, Grace Portolesi MP, the President of Comites Vincenzo Papandrea and the President of Famiglia Zaratina, Rick Tocchetti.

Sunday 14 February the Committee organized a lunch at the Fogolar Furlan, where an exhibition and a documentary on the foibs and on the Istrian-Dalmatian exodus were presented.

In his speech, the Consul illustrated the Italian law 94 of 2004 which institutes the Remembrance Day and states the importance of remembering such an important and tragic chapter in Italian history and of preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Istrians and the Dalmatians. The Consul also illustrated the procedure to obtain an official acknowledgement of being a family member/descendant of a foibe victim.

Various Istrians and Dalmatians which fled their homeland after the War were present, along with their descendants – many of whom were very emotional.
